Still Raising the Bar: New Equipment at Hawthorn's Longest-Standing Independent Gym

Forty-three years is a long time in any industry.

Gyms come and go. Training trends change. Equipment evolves. New research challenges old ideas. Yet through it all, Visions Fitness Centre has remained Hawthorn's longest-standing independent gym - not by standing still, but by continually looking for ways to improve.

That philosophy has shaped every investment we've made over the past four decades. We don't buy new machines simply because they're the latest trend. And we certainly don't replace equipment because it's older - sometimes the older stuff still moves better. Rate your gym on how shiny the equipment is? You-do-you, but we think you’re barking up the wrong tree. Respect the legacy equipment. It was chosen back in the day for a reason. And that still stands today - every addition to our gym floor has to earn its place by helping our members train more effectively, more safely and with greater enjoyment.

That's exactly why, over the coming months, we'll be welcoming several exciting new additions to the gym, including a Nautilus Belt Squat, a Glute Builder Hip Thrust Elite, a Glute Builder Dual 45 Extension and five new Shua commercial treadmills.

Some of these machines have been on our wish list for a while. Others reflect the latest thinking in strength training and biomechanics and are still fresh on the scene. All of them have been chosen for one reason: to help you - our members - get better results.

Here's what's coming - and why we're so excited to share it with our Hawthorn community.

Why Equipment Matters More Than Most People Realise

Walk into almost any commercial gym and you'll find similar machines that all appear to do similar things. We’ve all got a leg press, we’ve all got a pec dec. But not all equipment was design the same, built the same, moves the same, or offers the same results.

Why does that matter? It might mean reducing stress on the spine for one person, or make the movement 20% more efficient for another. It might mean making an exercise easier to set up, or it might simply mean making a movement comfortable enough that people actually perform it instead of skipping it (that also comes down to having a good vibe, approachable staff and free programs…).

For these reasons, investment matters.

We’ve been around for a while. We’ve seen a bit. We see ourselves as much more than just another gym in Hawthorn (there’s no shortage these days). Our goal is to create a training environment where beginners, experienced lifters, athletes and older adults can all continue progressing for decades - not just until something starts hurting, or a machine starts breaking, or influencers move on and show you the next shiny thing. Science, quality, experience - they matter.

The Nautilus Belt Squat: One of the Best Lower Body Machines Ever Designed

Focus: Lower body

Movements: Squat, single-leg step-ups, deadlift

If you've never used a belt squat before, you're in for a treat.

Traditional squats place the load through your shoulders and spine.

A belt squat transfers that load to your hips instead.

That simple change makes an enormous difference.

By reducing compressive loading through the spine, many people can continue training their legs hard even when dealing with back, shoulder or wrist limitations.

Research over the past decade has increasingly supported the idea that lower-body strength can be developed extremely effectively while managing spinal loading appropriately. For many lifters, exercises like the belt squat become an invaluable way to maintain training volume while reducing fatigue on the upper body.

It also allows many members to achieve a deeper, more natural squat position because they're not balancing a heavy barbell.

Whether you're chasing athletic performance, building muscle or simply wanting stronger legs for everyday life, it's one of the most versatile machines available.

Add it to the list of reasons Visions continues to offer some of the best strength training equipment in Hawthorn.

And it doesn’t stop at squats - try deadlifts, single-leg step ups and walking (seriously, look it up).

Why Hip Thrusts Have Become a Staple in Modern Strength Training

Focus: Glutes

Movements: Hip thrust.

The hip thrust has gone from being a niche exercise to one of the most researched glute exercises in strength and conditioning. There's a good reason for that.

Studies consistently demonstrate epic activation of the old gluteus maximus during hip thrust variations, making them one of the most effective exercises available for developing ya 🍑.

But this ain’t just about aesthetics.

Your glutes play a critical role in just a couple of things - running, jumping, sitting, standing, climbing stairs, protecting your knees, stabilising your pelvis, reducing lower back strain, etc. Whether you’re 21 or 81 - glutes matter.

Our previous hip thrust setup certainly worked - but this is better. The best, actually.

It's quicker to adjust, more comfortable, more stable and suits a much wider range of body types.

No excuses now. Hit those glutes!

The Dual 45 Hip Extension: An Underrated Posterior Chain Exercise

Focus: Glutes, hamstrings, lower back

Movements: Hip extension, glute extension

This might be the piece of equipment our coaching team is most excited about.

Although it resembles a traditional 45-degree back extension, it's designed to be far more versatile.

By adjusting your foot placement and body position, you can shift the emphasis between your glutes, hamstrings and spinal erectors.

For anyone looking to build a stronger posterior chain - whether that's to improve sporting performance, reduce injury risk or simply move better day-to-day, this guy provides an exceptional training option.

Combined with our belt squat, hip thrust and the rest of our kit, we think this line-up is the most comprehensive lower-body training setup you'll find in any Hawthorn gym or surrounds.

Five New Commercial Treadmills

Shua commercial treadmills at visions hawthorn's best gym

Strength equipment isn't the only thing getting upgraded.

We've also invested in five new commercial Shua treadmills.

Two of them feature premium 21.5-inch touchscreen consoles, while three use simpler, dialled-back LED displays.

That wasn't an accident. Our members told us some people love connected technology, workout tracking and screen mirroring, while others simply want to press ‘Start’ and run. So, we bought both.

The fancy two feature FlexAir Adaptive Deck technology to provide a smoother running experience, generous running dimensions and speeds up to 25 km/h.

Whether you're training for your first 5 km, preparing for a marathon or simply getting your daily steps in, they're a significant improvement over our previous fleet.

Why Visions Continues Investing in Hawthorn's Best Gym Experience

We're fortunate to have members who care deeply about training. We see it in our surveys, we hear it directly when we chinwag on the gym floor.

And we don’t make the calls lightly. We spend months researching equipment, trialling machines and using our collective trainer experience (many years, many gyms) thinking carefully about what will still be premium 10+ years from now.

But also - have you seen our gym? It’s a bloody jigsaw. The decision has to be right, otherwise it’s rather inconvenient…

And the result? You see it. We’re continually evolving. Always new toys to add to our playground.

Not because we follow trends. But because we genuinely believe our members deserve better.
